When I was little my father started teaching me a very important lesson: family is the most important thing in this world.
I think the lesson started when I first started fighting with my younger brother. I would give my brother a really hard time, and of course I would get in trouble, but when the dust settled my father would come to speak to me. He would tell me that my brother looked up to me, that I had to set an example, that I had to take care of him, but most importantly that we had to learn to get along. This of course is a lecture I think we all get if we have siblings, especially younger ones. But there was one thing that stuck in my head more than anything, he told me that when we were older, there would be a point where it would just be the two of us, that my parents would eventually pass on, and that we would be what was left of the family, and that we had to be there for each other. This eventually sunk in and I realized he was right.
Since then I can never understand how some siblings don't get along or rarely keep in touch or don't even like each other. My brother is my best friend, even though we are almost 5 years apart, and we have very different personalities, we trust each other completely and we are always there to help one another. We are our family.
