Universal: My Second Home

Mi segunda casa     La Cabaña

My father and his best friend/business partner run and own a language school that teaches Spanish to foreigners. They started out working together in an empty room with some metal Coca-Cola tables and chairs.* Universal, the school, has come a long way over the past 28 years, but embarrassingly I know very little its early history. Today, they receive students from all over the world, mostly working with university programs from the US.

La Alberca     La Cabaña

Even though I know very little of the beginnings of Universal, a very large part of my life has been spent within its walls and surrounded by its people. Growing up, I spent my summers running around and playing in the gardens. I have clear memories of spending whole days in the pool, parties with mariachis and endless games of hide and seek with my brother and my best friend. Excursions on the weekend, a fresh piece of bread every morning from the bakery down the street, beating all the students at ping-pong, the stories are endless. It is my home away from home, and everyone there is my second family.

I'm a week late, but Happy Birthday Universal!!

*This is what I remember being told, details could be wrong, but it is not far from the truth.
